General Dentistry
General Dentistry should be organized and completed in four phases. These are all treatments that should be completed by a general dentist. It is true that sometimes special circumstances and treatments will require the collaboration of a dental specialist. If that is the case, Dr. Hoang will function as the “quarterback” and make sure all parties are communicating properly and that the overall treatment plan is completed properly.
1) Immediate or emergency care
When there is pain, or there is a problem that requires immediate attention, it will likely take precedence over all other treatment until the issue is resolved.
2) Periodontal Care
Ideally a periodontal protocol is established and underway prior to the treatment of any tooth. That is because the periodontium, or the gums and bone, are the foundation and support system for the teeth. Without a healthy foundation, restorations will not have a high success rate. Periodontal care may be as simple as a 6 month recare protocol or more serious as in scaling and root planing. Periodontal Care is so important we’ve given it its own category. Find more information in the top menu on the left.
3) Restorative Dentistry
Restorative dentistry generally consists of fillings, crowns and bridges. It is “restoring” the teeth to their proper function.
4) Maintenance or Recare
Maintenance and recare is the ultimate goal for all patients. It is when the periodontal and restorative issues have been addressed and treatment has been accomplished. Patients return at routine intervals for new radiographs, an exam, and a cleaning. A “prophy” is for someone who has achieved and maintained periodontal health. “Periodontal maintenance” is reserved for those patients who have received scaling and root planing. It is generally thought “once a periodontal maintenance patient, always a periodontal maintenance patient.” Periodontal maintenance will include a regular cleaning of all teeth and special, selective treatment for any area that needs additional help. More information can be found under “Periodontal (Gum) Care” at left.
